I still consider myself a novice photographer.  When I rented this Canon 70-200 f/2.8, I was afraid that this was way too much lens for me to handle or be able to shoot decent shots with.  My first impressions of this were size and weight.  It’s a very heavy when combined with the weight of my battery gripped Canon 40D.  Lugging it around in a backpack wasn’t bad at first, but as the day and event I was shooting at went on, the weight became very apparent.

The things I like about this lens are the ultra fast focusing and amazing bokeh produced when shooting wide open.  Colors seem much more vibrant also compared to shots with my other lens…maybe it’s all in my head.  Here are a few shots I took at the last Hot Import Nights event held in Austin, TX on September, 18, 2009.

One of my favorite shots with very little post processing.

Continuous shooting was able to capture this guy testing his vertical.

European Autos

First time with panning & motorsports…much harder than I thought to get a sharp, clear photo.

Gotta keep these cars clean!

Lineup for Team Nextstage

After the car show weekend, I wanted to try my skills with some portraits before returning the lens.  Here are a few shots of my future wife.  Critique and comments are welcome.  This was my first attempt at taking pictures of a female model as well.

Love this bokeh

My favorite shot of the day.

Again, critique and comments are welcome!

Overall, I loved the experience of shooting with this lens.  It’s really helped me expand my creativity and realize what I’ve been missing with mediocre glass.  I may rent a 70-200 f/4 just to see if there’s a huge difference.  Of course price is a factor in my next lens purchase, so I’ll have to see if the difference between the f/2.8 and f/4 is justified in my eyes.  Check my previous review of Ziplens.com for my rental experience.
